What is the Goji Berry?
The goji berry is a small red berry from Eastern Asia. Though the entire plant is used for medicinal purposes, the berry is widely known to be the most potent. Also known as the “gogi berry” or “wolfberry,” it is almost completely known to the western world as “goji,” a name meaning “happy berry.” Although it grows in several areas throughout Asia and Eastern Europe, it is primarily found in China and Mongolia, only being commercially farmed in China. Its scientific name is “Lyceum Barbarum.”
The goji berry has a use dating back as far as 4,000 years to the legendary First Emperor of China, Shen Nung, as well as being included in one of the oldest known medical texts as a powerful life-enhancing food. It still occupies an important role today in Traditional Chinese Medicine, seeing frequent use by people and doctors alike. These regions hold the berry in high reverence as a super tonic – a substance which has the ability to benefit, strengthen, or heal many organs in the body. Interestingly, many of the world’s longest-living cultures are located next to plentiful goji sources from which they consume on a daily basis. Its trend of use is notable for being one of the few products to extend past its eastern origins and experience use throughout many parts of the world. Likened to green tea, goji is a natural health food that has become synonymous with health and nutrition. |
